Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Health and Family Welfare Minister Alo Libang inaugurated Nilung Tungko, the fourth indigenous school in Arunachal Pradesh dedicated to preserving and teaching the customs, faith, age-old traditions, and language of the Adi community.
The school is located in Komsing (Pabo) of Siang district. Addressing the occasion, Minister Libang emphasised the crucial role of Nilung Tungko in preserving ancestral knowledge for future generations.
He described the school as an institution where Adi customs and traditions are deeply integrated into formal education.
Libang urged everyone to take forward this noble initiative, highlighting the importance of not just preserving cultural heritage but actively practicing it in daily life as well.
Minister Libang recognized the school as a valuable asset for the Adi community and expressed immense pride in inaugurating the institution, which he sees as representing the vibrant future of the Adi community.
Department of Indigenous Affairs assistant director Tapun Taki and Donyi Polo Cultural & Charitable Trust (DPCCT) member Tamuna Messar also shared the functions and vision of the school. Nilung Tungko principal Tapor Mibang also spoke at the event.
Nilung Tungko is the fourth such school, following Nyubh Nyvgam Yerko in Rang, Nyubu Nyegam Yerko-Mwya in Seppa, and Menjwk Meqkok Rwguu in Basar.
Plans to expand this network of institutions to Daporijo and Ziro are reportedly underway.
Established in June 2023 on the banks of the Siang River in Pabo, the institution offers a curriculum that seamlessly incorporates age-old teachings with standard NCERT subjects.
The first batch enrolled a total of 25 boys, primarily selected from Adi-inhabited districts.
The school curriculum also includes traditional sports and games activities, craft preparation, recitation of folk tales and Adi language classes.
Among others, Pangin Boleng MLA Ojing Tasing, Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP) president Katung Waghe, East Siang deputy commissioner Tayi Taggu and his Siang counterpart PN Thungon were present on the occasion.
