Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network (MWGSN), an NGO run by Binalakshmi Nepram, has conferred with the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year Award 2011 SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT category at New Delhi on Friday - december 16, 2011.
A teary eyed Binalakshmi Nepram on receiving the award said "When I came to Delhi people called me 'chinki', they asked me where are you from, Thailand or Nepal? This award is a testimony that some Indians are different from the ones living in Delhi and Bombay. There are lot of arms and blood-shed there but we won't get scared, we will move on. Our determination to get peace is more than theirs for bloodshed,".
Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network has been actually nominated for CNN IBN Indian of the Year Award 2011 in public service category. The selection process involves a three tier process of which public voting is the final one.
Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network - a women-led organisation was set up to support women survivors of gun violence in Manipur in 2004. Due to violence, every year 300 widows are born in the state due to insurgency and counter-insurgency operations. To help widows get on with their lives, we set up the organisation.
